Inflation Relief Checks on the Way for Southern Tier Families

Gov Hochul new york inflation checks

Residents across the Southern Tier — including Cattaraugus and Allegany counties — will soon see a little extra help in their mailboxes. New York State has started mailing out “inflation refund” checks as part of a one-time effort to ease the burden of rising costs.

Led by Governor Kathy Hochul, an estimated 8.2 million households statewide will receive checks, with payments ranging up to $400 depending on household income and filing status.

How Much Can You Expect?

The refund amount depends on the income reported on your 2023 New York State tax return:

Married couples, joint filers, or qualifying surviving spouses

  • Income ≤ $150,000 → $400
  • Income $150,001–$300,000 → $300

Single filers, heads of household, or married filing separately

  • Income ≤ $75,000 → $200
  • Income $75,001–$150,000 → $150

No Application Needed

  • Checks are automatic. If you filed a 2023 New York tax return, your refund will be sent to the address on file.
  • Paper checks only. Payments will not arrive via direct deposit.
  • Not tied to debt. Refunds will not be used to offset unpaid state taxes.
  • Mailing through November. Residents should expect checks to arrive sometime in October or November. Delivery is not region-based, so neighbors may see theirs arrive at different times.

Why It Matters for the Southern Tier

We all know how tough inflation has hit our area. Whether it’s groceries in Olean, gas in Wellsville, or heating bills in Salamanca, everyday costs are stretching household budgets. While these checks won’t solve everything, they’re designed to put a little relief directly in your pocket.

For many in Cattaraugus and Allegany counties, this could mean help with winter heating bills, holiday expenses, or just catching up on everyday essentials.

What You Should Do

  • Check your mailbox regularly in October and November.
  • Keep an eye out for a New York State Treasury check — don’t mistake it for junk mail.
  • Use it where it helps most — groceries, gas, bills, or savings for the months ahead.
