Right across from the Olean Public Library on Laurens Street, you’ll find something simple yet deeply meaningful — a wooden box filled with kindness.
The Blessing Box, built by Girl Scout Troop 619 and started by the Olean First Presbyterian Church, is a 24/7 community pantry open to anyone in need.
Much like a little free library, this box works on a “take what you need, leave what you can” basis.
It’s stocked with non-perishable food items, household essentials, and — as the colder months approach — hats, gloves, and socks that can make all the difference on a chilly Southern Tier day.
Dedicated on September 28 after church, the Blessing Box is being used regularly by neighbors helping neighbors.
Whether you have a few extra cans to share or could use a helping hand yourself, you’re welcome to stop by anytime. Donations of non-perishable items or warm clothing directly to the box at any time.
There are also plans to expand this effort, with a second box coming soon to West Henley Street and a third location being sought in northern Olean.
If you know of a good spot or want to help, reach out to the church to get involved.
In a world that can sometimes feel divided, it’s inspiring to see something so simple — a box on a corner — remind us how connected we truly are.
